When I moved to these 3 relatively treeless acres about 15 yrs ago my
first antenna was 1/4 wave inv L hung from the only tree in my yard, a
15 ft tall black walnut tree. So one ground rod, then up 15 ft, then
115 feet out to a stake in the yard . A drooping L. SWR was 1.1:1. I
didnt expect any dx on TB but called frequent CQ's. Then one Dec eve,
I had a reply from a 4X4 who was armchair copy both ways. Oh by the
way, I was running 100w.

Then a few minutes later I had a similar armchair copy with and LZ.

Perhaps a month later at my sunrise I worked a JA. Nearly fell off the
chair.

Since then my tree has grown to 55 ft, and my INV-L is now 52 ft
vertical and 80 ft sloping down to a 20 ft tall tree in the ENE
direction. Ive added 26 1/4 wave radials and find that even without
the radials I still work Eu and VK. Midwestern soil (OH) must be
pretty good.

Got on a bit before 10PM local and tuned the band. Karel, OK1CF, had
a fine signal with little qsb. I moved up the band to call CQ and saw
several (6) rbn returns from EU. Many were in the mid 20s or higher
for s/n. Best band has been open for quite a while.?

Unfortunately, few others were on. Worked a couple but that was it.
Hope more move to CW to try the band.

This morning (Friday) VK2 and VK6 in again but no others. Signals
were good.?

Will using trees for supports impact the performance of this antenna?
I?m assuming so, but thought I would ask.

Tonight, Friday, 1/18, around 2300 I came on and band noise to NE,
and just about every other direction, was way up. My noise floor when
using the circle array, is typically around -145 or so. Tonight, -122.
Was wide spread with no modulation or pulsing.?

Coming back into the shack around 0100Z, band noise back to normal.

I did note AU was 30GW when band noise was high. Now 14GW.

Two questions: Did anyone else note the increase in the noise floor?

Could it be because of the more energized AU?

 Thanks

 Ron

As I have often mentioned before, I have always used a Low Dipole or
End-fed
Half Wave on 160m for the past 50 years at different QTHs . . . and
worked
 around 300 countries.

I currently have a horizontal Half Wave Dipole at 50 feet . . . and
my
signal across the pond on RBN usually is very similar to most other
EU
DXers, who nearly all use verticals.

I've always believed that - unlike 80m - DX propagation on 160m is
rarely
 Low Angle !
