Today's "The Daily DX" notes the passing of Steven Gibbs - GU3MBS.
Those of us with ham histories extending back into the 1950s remember him
well.
Steve Gibbs had a very extensive DXpedition history, beginning in the
early 60s when he was an operator at club station ZC4AK. He provided the
elusive Asian QSO for the first of the 160 meter WAC awards. Back in those
days 160 DXCC was of course unheard of, and 160 WAC was a tremendous
achievement.
Steve was also 5A3CJ in Libya, MP4BEQ in Bahrain, and while in Mauritius
as VQ8CC (later 3B8CC) he DXpeditioned to various other islands. In fact
Steve was the only guy to accompany both Don Miller - W9WNV and Gus Browning
- W4BPD on DX trips. He was e quite proud of that. While in the
Indian Ocean Steve also provided some 160 meter "Firsts".
Steve also operated as GM3MBS/W0 from Colorado for some time, and I
believe he then moved to Guernsey. While there he built several Elecraft K2
radios. A few years back Steve suffered a stroke which severely curtailed
his ham activity.
Some years ago Steve came to the Dayton Hamvention. He carried a little
book with him, which listed each and every QSO that he ever had in his ham
career. He very deliberately marked EYEBALL QSO in that book when you met
him!
Sadly we lose legends like this all too often.
RIP Steve
