K8DO began monitoring at 2200Z Tuesday evening on 1826.5... First signals
were copied at 2225 here in mid Michigan, although the 1/2/3 pack was in full
cry by 2210... signals were Q3 to Q4 and S0 (at or just below the noise
level) most of the monitoring period, though they ramped up and peaked for
about 3 minutes centered around 2258 as a Q5 S1 (just above the noise
level).... signals lost by 2310... the early copy was best on the 45 degree
beverage... by the time they peaked they were better on the 120 degree lobe
of the transmit array... near the end, 120 degrees was the only copy
direction...
It is certainly frustrating to hear stations to the east commenting among
themselves that Heard is 559 to 579 at their qth.... I called Heard a few
times when they were at their peak here... no joy so far... Also, I swapped
out the ZV Beverage Box for an unamplified, matching transformer... It seems
to give a better signal to noise ratio on the longer beverages...
