Since the posting of W0FLS on June 6, every day (except when
traveling or when there were strong electrical storms in the
immediate area) I had been looking for VI9NI before and around the
time of my sunrise, and on several occasions, starting at their
sunrise. From the cluster spots, it is clear that they were there
every day that I was listening. Most days I heard nothing, and never
heard them strong enough to call, until this morning.
Our sunrise (in central Iowa) was 10:40 UTC today, and I began
listening about 10:20. By 10:30, they were Q5. The signal-to-noise
ratio was much better with my antenna pointed in the NW direction. I
am not sure if this was because of a skew path or a null from all of
the electrical storms in the E and SE of here this morning.
Nevertheless, signals were Q5 to the NW and only Q3 or 4 to the SW.
After waiting for a lull in activity, after the VI9NI signal had
peaked, I called at 10:50 and made the contact. By 11:00 I could no
longer copy them Q5.
I am sure that I speak for many of us in saying thanks for a
wonderful operation, being there every morning (apparently) to try to
pull out our weak signals on this challenging band (as well as the
equally stellar operations on the other bands).
