I wondered that too. I thought a Zepp would be and end fed dipole fed with 1/4 wave of open wire line. Of course there is the extended Zepp and the Extended Double Zepp configuration and a few others.

What makes a 130' center fed dipole a Zepp?

That is an excellent setup, John. Nice choice.

I'm a friend of that antenna too and have used it most of the time for the
past 50 years.

Can't run openwire at this QTH so I had to develop a different antenna that
works all bands with coax, no matchbox - except of course to tune across
the
entire 80m band.

The 238 is a great matchbox. I have one too. Used to use it with openwire
with a home-brew balun built after a circuit recommended to me by Bob
(K4TAX).

Your description of the balun isn't enough to say whether or not it is OK; it's not just a matter of having a big core inside, it also counts "how it is wired". Being "Military" is meaningless. The military bought a lot of
bad stuff as well as good stuff. But if you are not having any problems,
then it is probably OK.

On bands it won't load, simply add 1/8 wavelength of additional feedline
and
I'm certain you will find that it then loads OK.

I've been a little fuzzed up with computer problems - think I missed some
of
the discussion. I use a center fed zepp, 130' long, fed with 450 ohm
plastic covered open wire. It's fed through a big military surplus balun,
big cores, inside an sealed aluminum box outside. 4 or 5' of RG-8 out to
that from a TT 238 tuner. It loads well on almost all bands, and seems to
have a decent signal, as shown in the recent W1AW/KY exercises.

I also have a Cushcraft Mini-beam at about 40' which isn't great, but gives a little boost. Ten-Tec Hercules II matches up well with the Eagle, and a
friend gave me the Amp switch made by WB8VGE, which works like a charm. I
can't tell its operation from the full break-in operation with the Omni
Vi+.

(Which is
in Sevierville for a 20 year checkup right now.

Really enjoying the Eagle.
