Aloha Mike!
Either will work. If you use the 1/8" jack make sure to wire your plug with
ring and sleeve shorted. The Eagle checks for this to learn if you have a
straight key or a paddIe connected.
I use the Eagle's internal keyer with a paddle. I also have a straight key
and N1MM logger in parallel. To make it work, I tell the radio I am using
the straight key or computer by cycling through the modes with the dash
side of the paddle closed.
I use a cheapo USB to serial converter with N1MM logger for keying computer
keying. If I recall correctly it's via the RTS line. The adapter was 99
cents from China. Being easily distracted and not particularly studious,
I've not yet learned to use the N1MM logger :-).
Why didn't I use the ACC connector for keying? The DIN plug connector for
that accessory socket is pretty tight soldering. It was enough trouble
hooking up a bit of ethernet net cable to the "Signalink" audio adapter. I
couldn't see room to add another keying cable and tap into the amplifier
keying line.
For keying the Hercules 2 amplifier, I made a small patch to the Eagle
circuit board and re-purposed one of the 13.8V accessory connectors. I
don't know why Tentec did not do this. The traces are right next to each
other on the board. The other 13.8V connector supplies a MFJ1025 which is
in the keying loop.

GE to the list,
I am about to put my new Eagle 599 on the air for the first time in the next
week or so and I am curious about how to use an external keyer. On page 18
of the manual it indicates that you plug an external keyer into the rear
apron with a mono 1/8" phone plug. Then on page 23, it appears you need to
use pins 2 and 3 of the ACC1 connector for external keyer input. I want to
run a K1EL winkeyer usb3 with computer control. Which of these options is
correct?
Thanks and 73
