You have a point, but I don't think it's been done with Amateur firmware.


TenTec would have to attract qualified, responsible programmers so TenTec's 
reputation would not be muddied.



Would hams pay for firmware upgrades?  Probably would have to be spectacular 
new features to attract paying customers.


Would hams pay for sustained maintenance?  Probably not if the current firmware 
is acceptable...obviously it is, TenTec has been successful with the Orion.


It all depends on the language used to program the firmware, how well written 
and understandable the programs are, whether there is sufficient memory 
available for
maintenance and upgrades....the training and costs to take over firmware 
maintenance has to be balanced against expected revenue.   


A big risk.  Would you take it?  Is it worth it?

I was reading through the tread on the EOL of the OII, and one comment was
about firmware.  I wonder if TecTec has ever considered open sourcing the
firmware for there out of production radios?  Certainly would extend their
life, and allow for continued improvement.
