I think one of the reasons the Drake R-4B, Hallicrafters SX-117 and
many others are beter in a noisy condition is simply they do not have
all the high frequency respnse in the audio, or maybe it is the tube
amp??. I wish there was a HF cutoff on the OII, full EQ like Bob Heil
recommended day one to TT way back may have helped.

Interestng...last nght, on 40 I was working a really nice guy in St
Kitt. There was quite a lot of QRN, He was just above the noise floor
I found that if I used the old Hallicrafers SX-117 to receive
him...copy was more clear!!!!

OMG, Maybe we need to go back to the older stuff (I have both) Unless
of course it is contesting at a high level...where you need lot of speed

I use the Collins S line & KWM-2
Drake C line (all Sherwood mods)
Halli SX-117/HT-44
Halli SX-115/HT-32B

Along with the OII of course.....

Lee,

Interesting. The only Hallicrafters receivers I have here are an S-38
and
an S-38C. The 566 beats them :-)

It also beats my KWM-2 (on reception that is -- Collins transmit audio
is
still Collins audio) and my 75S-1 (with and without the 500 Hz filter).
 My
FT-102 does at least as well on weak HF signals, though, but fails
miserably in the presence of strong adjacent signals. As has been
documented
elsewhere, the noise blanker in the FT-102 is always on! On 160,
however, I
think the O II NB beats the FT-102 in the presence of QRN.

I have an old Autek QF-1 that I used to use on 144 MHz EME. If you
need a
narrower filter than 100 Hz, it will go down to 30-40 Hz or so. Boy,
though, does it ring!

Ray,
Yep for CW I use the manual notch IF I ant to make one go away.....
The NR is, well not so good...usually I just leave it off.
Occationally
it works OK..
To tell the truth, I have several boat achor RX's that do much beter
in
noise.
The best is probably the Hallicrafters SX-117...it's audio PB is on
the
low side...so it is MUCH quieter to listen to...rather nice I might
add. As you tune...signals just seem to jump out of the noise.
I think a external audio filter setup would work pretty well on OII...
Any one try one yet?

Lee,

I hardly ever use the AN (rather useless on CW) but I find the NR MUCH
better than 2.041XT. Not much difference from 2.039d, though.

Anyone else hear that?

Lee,

Sounds good to me. Bring it back, along with the waterfall!

Ray,
He is talking about the nice feature (which was removed in 2.044a)
that
freezes the sweep dsplay when you tune so that you can pounce right
on
the signal your after..I LOVED IT...NOW IT IS GONE :-(

Tim,

I don't know what you mean by "freezes," but when I turn the VFO knob
the
display doesn't move for about one second. That's enough for me to
tune
close to the desired signal, if not right on it. And, yes, the
display
width is selectable (in v2.044A). I usually keep it at 36 kHz,
which
I find
useful on CW. As for the high speed sweep board, the most recent
word
from
John was that it's still in the design stage.

I recently bought a used Orion I after not having an Orion for

I really like the way the sweep display works now in that when you
turn
the VFO the display freezes and you can tune to a signal of choice
on
the screen. It's not as elaborate as some implementations of an
internal
scope but I find it to be very useful.

My question is does the firmware on the Orion II offer the same
or similar capability? Does it have any other sweep display
features

in
addition to those of the Orion I? I would like to have the ability
to
pick a display width as in the past.

Any word on the promised "High Speed Display" that was talked
about in years past??

I find I am really enjoying the Orion and am thinking seriously
of getting an Orion II and either trading this original Orion
towards
one or selling it to buy one. I had forgotten how really nice the CW
operation (QSK in particular) works on the Orion.
