I Use an 8 port USB to serial FTDI adapter. I have never had any problems with it at all and it gives me 8 serial ports that work fine even on a laptop. I use it for software development for all my radios in my software development lab.

And do they make this 4 port serial adapter for a Toshiba Laptop?

Amen. I paid a mere $16 for my 4-port serial adapter -a very cheap way
to add 4 "real" serial ports to the box. I have touted this solution on
several ham reflectors. A few report success following suit, whilst the
rest continue to flog the old USB-Serial-adapter carcass, wondering why
they still have problems!

abandoned all efforts to use a USB to RS-232 interface and opted to
install a real RS-232 card in the computer with a fully populated DB-9
to DB-9 cable between the radio and the computer. Life is so much easier.
