I wonder how the SO2R features of the Orion will mesh with the way SOR2 is
currently done with contesting s/w and h/w?

Heck, when you set it up, the default rig is the Omni V !!!
I originally got it because it was one of the few to support the Pegasus,
and now I run either the Peg or the Omni V.9 with it. Great program for
contesting only.
It supports tons of contests.
