The problem is that the IF is 9 MHz, the output is 18 MHz so the oscillator for the simple hardware scheme is 9 MHz. Trouble is that the second harmonic of the oscillator will be stronger than the mixer product and on the same frequency so it will be impossible to remove. Later radios mixed the VFO up to high side injection at 27 MHz, which cures the oscillator harmonic problem from the transmit mixer, but inverts the natural sideband. 73, Jerry, K0CQ -- Entire content copyright Dr. Gerald N.
