Charlie and the Group,
There are many reasons that a station may have you in his log. Although
the more popular response to the issue is simply for the stations to
work each other again, there are some who feel that the time arguing
about whether or not to work again is productive!!??
Several techniques can be used to reduce "dupes" but probably not
totally eliminate them.
First, if you are primarily working S&P (Search and Pounce), it is good
practice to include the station's callsign in your response to him so he
knows you are working him. There might be a station on a nearby
frequency that thinks you are working him, and thus logs you.
Second, when S&P, know how your radio works regarding your TX/RX offset
(especially on CW) and try to call stations as close to their frequency
as possible. I have many occasions where people call me as much as
400-700 hz away and sometimes I miss them, other times I have to spend
extra time verifying that they are really calling me.
If a station says you are a dupe, you need to A) Verify his callsign and
B) ask what time/qso # or whatever to you can go back and check where
the problem might be. If you find that further research still doesn't
yield a "match", call the station again and tell him "NIL" or
Not-In-Log. That will get their attention as they also run the risk of
losing the QSO if they don't work you "again" because if he is not in
your log, then he will not get credit for the alleged "previous" QSO.
You can check out some more on this topic as I believe I have written
some operating technique suggestions and posted them on the Tennessee
Contest Group web site listed at the bottom of my e-mail.
Apologies for the length of this reply, but a lot of us use Ten-Tec gear
