Hi Jim and welcome to the "Wonderful World of Pegasus". I believe
you'll enjoy it more as you learn more about it. I've had mine for a
couple of months and just can't get enough! :-)
The best logging program I've found is Logger and it's FREE! You can
download it at http://www.itis.net/golist/ go to the download
area.
As far as mic's are concerned I can't help you much there (I don't own
one) except I've seen several reports that the Ten-Tec 705 is hard to
beat.
