Bill,
I owned a Scout for a while but "let it go" for exactly the same reason.
The whine really got to me after a while, I noticed the tone changed
slightly when I threw the toggle switch which allowed the keyer speed to
be set. I thought the noise may have been due to the display circuit but
didn't ever get to the bottom of the problem. One other thing I recall
the tone pulsed every now and then but I cant remember under what
conditions.
Yet after all this I wonder if I have been missing out on something -
every one seems to rave about the Scout. It just didn't float my boat
and the cost here in the UK could not compare to the DX70 which
replaced it for a while.
