In Europe no commercial gear was available until the late 60’s, when we
could begin to afford the $. Not enough surplus gear either, so most of us
had to build your own. I began in 1953 with a 0-V-1 (A415!), but with BCL
tubes and a 807 in the tx I was flying at my A license in 1957. And what an
improvement the homemade 4-pole X-tal filter was! First commercial gear, a
HW-16 in 1975. Of course, radio and propagation became my professional
career.
