Find a computer shop around you and locate a shielded serial cable. They
aren't too hard to find. If that is not enough, then buy a Radio Shack
ferrite core and wrap a couple loops of the serial cable through it -
this should choke off common-mode stuff which might be arriving on the
shield itself. One or both of these should help, I think.
