John-

Thanks a million. My original demon infested Orion 1 made many trips back
to the mothership. This one is a replacement they very kindly gave me as a
swap after giving up on fixing my intermittent RIT. This one seems to be
fine in every other respect, and I suspect I can replace the pot if need be.
I assume you meant to ask TenTec to send one?

Bob,

I have had the same problem with my Orion I. There is a control like the
mike gain control under the bottom of the unit near the AN button. But
there is no access hole for a screw driver so you must remove the bottom.
>From the menu, set your display to 50% and then adjust the control with a
small screw driver for the best balance on contrast. You may have to look
at the screen at an odd angle to see the 50%. Ten-Tec replaced my control
and said it would not hold its value. The part is about 50 cents, so I
would buy the miniature pot and replace it if I had the problem today. That
is a lot less than the freight! Good luck.

Last night I turned on my Orion 1 only to see that the boot up message was
very washed out (backlight normal), and when the rig had booted I could
barely see the "dials." I tried to go into the menu to fiddle with the
contrast but couldn't see it well enough to do. Power cycling did not
help-but I found that if I waited a minute or so there was a step change to
a normal display. This morning I also saw the same thing.

I suspect this is a prelude to a cataclysmic display collapse, but given how
normal the display looks once the problem has cleared, I am not convinced
this is actually a display problem. I wonder if anyone on the reflector has
experienced this-or has a good idea of the problem-and can tell me what is
going on and what to expect? I really hate shipping the rig back to the
mothership but I will begin my search for the carton.
