Alan,
I beg to disagree, INMHO it is not cheesy, it was the standard Audio line
out put at the time, and the only strange thing is they included the stereo
jack which clearly was to let you use 32 ohm stereo, (or 45 ohm) mini
headphones without a mono adapter.  (Ear buds).

Just as the PTO was a standard way of building an oscillator to a price
point, which is the way companies survive.   I doubt anyone would call the
Collins line of transmitters cheesy and they all used a PTO!
