Gentlemen, you are incorrect.
Verticals work just fine without any radials at all.

Now let's all get on the same page:

 >> A Quarter Wavelength Vertical requires the kind of radial network you
guys have been talking about.

 >> A Half Wavelength Vertical does not require any radials. It is a bear
to match and difficult to control the Common Mode Current, but it does not
need radials.

 >> A Center-Fed Vertical Dipole (1/2 wavelength long) does not require any
radials and does not have any significant Common Mode Current problems.

 >> For that matter, a very short Openwire-Fed, Center-Fed Vertical Dipole
does not require any radials at all but can be difficult to match on 80m...
but it is easily doable with a Ten-Tec matchbox.

But to say a vertical requires radials is wrong.

One of the best limited space, low profile antennas is a center-fed,
openwire fed short vertical. You can work all bands with it, with 40m and
above working quite well, albeit 80m is a bit down from a full size
horizontal, but at least you are on the air on that band. THIS is how you
make a vertical work efficiently when your tiny yard has no room for
radials.

For vertical to work at all it needs RADIALS. I have found that 30 radials
is a min and 60 is best.
