That red stuff is probably the only grease you can buy in Seever ville. It comes from the co-op. The way I figure it, if they bought a gallon back in the mid 1970s, they would still have most of it left. I had the notion that warming it might help my Triton 544. I set it on a steam radiator for a few hours. All it accomplished was making the rig hot.

The viscosity of the red stuff is fine for a while, but as
you suggest, it does tend to eventually dry up.  Decent
tractor lube though - where the parts get warm each time you
use the machine.
I used LubriMatic lithium grease the last time I rebuilt my
PTO and it seems to be holding up well. Mobil One synthetic
gear lube is supposedly good also, but never tried it.
