Assuming you don't have your K2 in SSB mode, I think you can put MODE = 
CW in the config file to force the issue.  Not sure who wins if the 
radio is one way and the config the other.

Without a radio connected I think it comes up in the last mode used  
(not sure since I don't use TR that way).
