One of the functions is the TF-Set feature. I use a second footswitch in split
pileups to check the transmit frequency. It's a WHOLE lot more convenient
than reaching over to the front panel.
Also, on the '850, did you know that when you are operating split and use the
TF-Set you can have completely different filter combos set up on the two
VFOs? That allows you to have things really narrow on the RX VFO to cut
through the QRM, and much wider on the TX VFO, making it easier to pan
through the band finding the station the DX is working.
Maybe a lot of radios have that capability now, but I don't think anyone did
when I first got the '850. Fabulous feature.
