The modes that are more robust (accurate) are slow. The modes that are faster
are less robust.
This issue has been debated for years. For contesting, especially for multi-hop
DX QSOs where PSK falls flat, 45* baud 170 Hz shift RTTY seems to be the
contester's favorite, at least so far.
When faster baud rates are used, robustness falls off. When narrower shifts are
used, selective fading becomes a problem which ATC can not overcome. When wider
shifts are used, QRM becomes a problem. When more bits are used, the chance of
corruption due to a bit flip increases.
Everything in this area is a compromise.

* Purists will point out the standard is actually 45.45, not 45, but it is
normally rounded off in conversations. Matters little, apparently.
