You can say the same thing about high power or big antennas ... 

An effective station automation system and second rig for SO2R will 
set the average person back $3000 - $4000.  A modest tribander and 
60-70' of tower plus installation will cost at least that much as 
will a "legal limit" amplifier.  In all three cases it may be possible 
to scrounge, buy used, or build for less but the cost/benefit ratio is 
still about the same.
