I agree with Jeff on the 3-500z. I have used a Heathkit SB-220 which I built
from a kit in 1972. It has been run hard in RTTY contesting/rag chewing ever
since. It still has the original pair of Eimac 3-500z and delivers full
power with no problem. There are designed to glow red in normal use. This
anode temperature is required to make the getter material, which coats the
anode, work. Getter material bonds with gas particles so keeping a good
vacuum. Under running 3-500z is not a good idea.
The EHT transformer died after years of abuse as it was never designed to
run RTTY at full power - the insulation broke down. I replaced it with an
external fan cooled toroidal transformer which just works.
One big advantage of the 3-500z is the almost instant on just a few seconds.
Great for working that DX station you absolutely need to work before he goes
QRT.

I would agree with Joe's recommendation. A 3-500z beats any number of 811s
any day of the week in my book. I have a box of 572b here (a much stouter
tube than the 811) on the shelf that died running within their specification
limits in RTTY contesting. I suppose that the 811 will do just fine if you
are careful. A 3-500z can take miserable abuse and still keep smiling
though.

Dick, I would suggest the AL80B instead of the 811's. The single 3-500Z
will last a long time in RTTY use.
You can get a used AL80B for about the same price as the 811.
AA5AU uses two AL80B for rtty contesting and he is a winner most of the time
