One requirement that is unique to ham radio is to have the
ability to add a bunch of serial ports and at least one
parallel port. That means at least one irq has to be
available for one of those SIIG/Byterunner/SYBA multiport
boards. If the computer comes with a serial port, you can
steal that irq. Adding all those ports will require one pci
slot, plus maybe some extra space on the back for all those
connectors.
I think a real sound card is another requirement. From what
I've seen, most on-board sound systems produce some digital
noise on the audio output. This becomes irritating on ssb
messages, and on the live mic, if you route it through the
sound system. It probably wouldn't sound very good
transmitting audio on the digital modes either.
Considering the above, 3 pci slots is a bare minimum,
especially if you need a modem.
