Hi all,
Really sad news about Darrell. I hadn't seen his call for the past couple of
years in a contest, but we did manage some 60+ contacts over the years.
>From what Fred WW4LL wrote, it seems he was a bit of a dark horse to many of
us!
What some folk manage to achieve, yet keep quiet never fails to surprise me.
We used to have a member of our club who had "an interest in electronics",
but we never knew what, and he never made anything of it, just brushing
aside our queries, but when he sadly passed away, many from the club
attended his funeral, and we were extremely shocked, and also very humbled,
by the fact that some attendees were from NASA - former astronauts,
diplomats from Europe and the USA, and it turned out he was deputy head of
the European Space Agency!
He also held patents for numerous things, including the way satellite TV is
distributed.
It just goes to show how varied our hobby really is!
My sympathies to his family, they must feel deeply sad.
Cheers Darrell, you will be missed!

It is an unpleasant task in notifying you that our good friend, Dr. Darrell
Penrod, K9MUG, passed away on October 14, 2014 after sustaining a fall at
his home. Darrell was 77 yrs young and loved life and amateur radio. He
operated at my place many times and was an accomplished DXer, CW op, RTTY op
and had 340/347 confirmed in the ARRL DXCC Mixed Standings.
"The MUG" had a BS in engineering from from Northwestern, an MS in math from
Washington State and a PhD in engineering from Illinois. He taught
vibrations and dynamics in the mechanical engineering department at Auburn
and was also a professor at Notre Dame. Most people didn't know about
Darrell's credentials, however, if you ever spent any time with him, you
knew he was extremely intelligent. Darrell taught me more life lessons than
academics and I miss him already.
Darrell loved RTTY contesting, even though he was an accomplished CW op. To
steal from Eric, W4DXX today, "The MUG" is 599 everywhere now.
73'..Fred, WW4LL
