We do NOT have FIOS or fiber to the house but rather the legacy copper to
the house is terminated at the DSLAM. The Fiber is the trunk between the
DSLAM and the Central Office. The DSLAM acts as the MUX for the copper to
fiber transition.

Subject: Re: [RFI] VDSL (very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line)
Is it that they use a better fiber-to-copper converter at the street,
then split the lines to the homes, rather than running fiber to each
house & using a poorer quality converter?
I'm trying to understand the reason for interrupting the fiber prior
to the run from the street to each house.

I have Frontier 6 Mbs DSL - Fiber to the DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line
Access Multiplexer) then buried copper pair to the house Network
Interface, CAT-3 pairs to the ADSL-2 modem, router, and wi-fi gateway.
The Netgear 7550 DSL modem sits in the shack. Thus far there has been no
evidence of RFI to or from the Netgear 7550.
A search on VDSL
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very-high-bit-rate_digital_subscriber_line)
shows
that Bloomington IL is a market where 40 Mbit/sec downstream and 10
Mbit/sec upstream is available. In all cases the length of the copper
path from the DSLAM, the equipment terminating the copper pairs at the
DSLAM and at the subscriber location will ultimately determine line
quality and downsteam / upstream speeds.

I'm not sure myself, but I believe the fiber cable is someplace else
from this street and it's converted in some way from fiber to copper
phone line then routed to the house or use existing phone wiring. But
I'm not sure if I have that right. Maybe someone else has better
information.

What's the difference between VDSL & DSL?
We have fiber-DSL to the exterior of our home then it's converted
in a box prior to entry.
Why would they do it differently than that?
David KD4E
Anybody have VDSL service to their home? I did a quick lookup and it
uses copper to the home at frequency band 25 Khz to 25 Mhz. My next
door just signed up for it. I wonder if that will be my next
challenge.
