Mike (W9RE) was experiencing RFI on 160 meters that had repeating humps
every 55 KHz and it turns out it was raising his overall noise floor.
Yesterday Mike and I tracked the RFI down to his neighbors house and I just
uploaded a video onto YouTube that documents this case.
Tracking the RFI down to 2 adjacent homes that were potentially generating
the RFI was very easy (just took minutes), but figuring out which of the 2
homes the RFI was really coming from took much more effort and
ingenuity along with 2 really great homeowners that allowed us free access
to their property. I really can't say enough about Mike's neighbors.
Here is a link to the YouTube video which documents this case for those
interested: https://youtu.be/K2jI0J14hbM
Note: I've been noticing that adjacent homes that are fed from the
secondary of the same transformer often cause the innocent house to be
screaming RFI (either due to conduction or induction????). In this case we
used a sniffer loop to measure relative RFI field levels going into each
homes utility meter at the two adjacent homes and there was only a 6 dB
difference between the two homes but this 6 dB difference along with the
portable flag direction finding results on a higher frequency and relative
field strength measurements at each homes porch was enough for us to be
confident we knew which home was really generating the RFI, and we were in
fact correct.
Just FYI, and 73.
