You mentioned an FT-817, have you checked on higher bands?
My Kenwood TH-F6A VHF/UHF talkie and Kenwood TM-D71A both have RX
capability outside the ham bands, and both can be set for AM detection.
Lately I've been bothered by noise that I suspect is coming from power
lines, so I've programmed a half dozen memories inboth of those radios
for AM detection at 160 MHz, 300 MHz, 400 MHz, and 524 MHz (chosen
because that's where the high sensitivity mode in one of the radios
falls off).
I've been driving around listening on 160 MHz, then when that noise gets
loud, switching to increasingly higher frequencies to tell me when I'm
close to the source. Now I have a pole number and address to give PG&E's
RFI guy. It's 0.6 miles from my shack, and lines its noise is conducted
onto are closer.
