I recently traded my trusty TS-940S/AT in for an FT-1000MP and
haven't used it much yet on CW, however, KD4OJM (an 18 yr old
that already has 290 countries worked/confirmed - mostly on CW)
came over and worked the CQWW CW contest. He was disappointed
that the responses were as slow and lagging as they were. I
couldn't figure it out, either, in view of the fact that I've
had previous very strong signal reports from Europe, Asia, Africa,
and South America when using the TS-940S/AT on CW in conjunction
with the AL-1500 and a 40-2CD at 140 feet.

All the above is background for my (perhaps naive) question:

Because of the comments on CW/LSB and CW/USB recently, I just
checked the 1000MP and found that it was operating on CW/LSB
when on 40 meter CW operating position. Could this have
accounted for the relatively poor performance in the contest?
What exactly does the CW/LSB versus CW/USB do to a CW signal
in relation to the received signal's zero?

The second question is in reference to the fact that I can
hear a cw signal on both sides of the "zero" point despite
the 500 cycle position on filters. I could not do that with
the TS-940S/AT. Do I need to offset the signal in order to
get the filter to cut off at, say, the 50 cycle point?

Please color me an ignorant ol' coot who just is not completely
competent when faced with a rig of such flexibility and of such
complexity. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

The Ol' Coot
