The problem with TU QRZ for a RUN station is that it burns time for late
arriving S&P.
If I'm operating unassisted, and I don't have a prior contact from the log spot
on your frequency, then I don't know who is there.
If you reply TU <call> then I am ready to rock and roll. In fact, if I come up
on you and only catch your call, then I am ready to
go. Your Q rate and my Q rate both benefit.
But if you end with QRZ, either because your call is long (vs. the time to send
QRZ) or whatever - then I need to wait for your CQ
cycle timeout, and call again. Maybe another 10-15 seconds.
Of course, if you have the guys lined up 3 deep, then it won't matter - someone
else will jump in. But that generally does not
happen after the first half of a contest is over, or unless there's a fresh
spot of your call to send them your way.
It seems to me that if you end TU <call>, that's about as short as you can make
it while preserving the max info content in the
exchange.

My *preference* when concluding one contact and moving on to the next
(especially in the unlikely situation [for me] that I have multiple callers)
would be to send "TU QRZ." That way, if you just "happened" upon me, you'd
know I was soliciting calls, and those who were waiting would know to go
ahead. As I said, though, simply sending "TU WW3DE" also works.
My point is to avoid appending "TEST" onto the end of either a CQ or when
you solicit additional contacts from the same CQ. If you feel you MUST send
"TEST" at the end of anything, and you're sending via the computer logger,
speeding up the "TEST" part seems to make good sense, as W5GN has suggested.
My reasoning here, again, is not to have my "TEST" step on the calling
stations, who nearly always seem to start calling immediately after either
"QRZ" or "WW3DE" in these situations.
This said, I do not intend to engage in an endless debate on the "right" or
"wrong" of my suggestions or others. Use whatever works for you. I have
contributed my $0.02 to the conversation.
Thanks & 73, Rick / WW3DE

Suppose I came up on your frequency after you had already sent the word
TEST. What I hear is just your call sign. How do I know whether you are
calling CQ or just calling someone. I think TEST after the call sign is more
fruitful.

IMHO QRZ? is redundant. When you are sure there is someone else waiting for
you, who already knows your call, just sent TU or TU + your call. If nobody
comes back then send your call (once or twice, depending on the rate) +
TEST.
When you send QRZ anyone who came up on frequency during the above QSO does
not know who you are. and have to wait till your next call+test sequence
(more impatient one will send ?). If you do not want them to immediately
know your call (for pile up management reasons) just sent TU. If pile up is
thin then just add your call to TU. That will allow you to work the next one
in the queue and stop some passer by who will be able to check if he needs
you.
