Well, as to contacting folks before the contest, I
rarely hear any QSOs involving an exchange of
requisite Contest QSO information and I certainly
don't see anybody logging those contacts.
In fact, during SS this year, I fired up about 7 or 10
minutes before the contest and made a few QSOs (to
actually get my hands used to a paddle for the first
time in nearly 5 months).
I actually did not make a QSO until 21:01:02. After
about two or three CQs.
