In the Sprint rumored scores (and other recently published
scores), I have noticed quite a few new club calls. Some of
the club calls appear to belong to individuals who are well
known in contest circles. Here are a couple of examples:

What is the deal with these new calls? Have you guys set up clubs
in your homes, or is this part of the process required to get a
desired vanity call? I am definately NOT looking to start any flames
here, please. I am just trying to understand why several top notch
contesters have applied for club call signs. (And of course,
wondering if I need to do the same to get the call I'm after!)

This Sprint was the shakedown cruise for the cw station for VK9LX, less
the amp. Tested FT990, TopTen, Dunestar, TR s/w & keying circuits,
laptop, radio interface box, plus assorted cables and other junk.
The radio (of YK0A and 3D2 Conway fame) was not set for electronic TR --
sorry for the choppy cw.
I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why I couldn't send a serial
number from my S&P exchange. Apologies to those early Q's who had to ask
for it. <Never did figure it out.>
With all the weird new radio/computer stuff, I didn't dare run the amp, too.

Hi Gang, or should I say, "The Assemblage of Derek-like-objects"...
If I have to copy one more Derek mutant, I will HURL! It's a good thing I
didn't have a big, hefty mallet within arms reach ;-) At least all the
Eds were spelled the same! Next time, it's five-letter code groups for
the lot of you...
40 was the place to be from Washington. 20 was hot for a little while,
but rapidly moved south. CA was getting all the calls, so off to 40 where
it really came alive at about 0100. Hopping back to twenty turned up RI
and WV mults before it went completely away...no late KL7 mult this time!
My new 80-meter half-slopers really work great...the goats in the pasture
are temporarily spared from vertical arrays...until I miss something on
80, that is.
Oh yeah, 223 x 43, low-power, for 9589. Still haven't cracked 10k on
low-power, but did manage to squeek by K7SS while he was fighting over
frequencies ;-) "Beat Danny" is the eternal (and futile) battle cry for
us up here in the corner, so I'm thrilled. However, if I had to use his
home antennae, and he mine, I wouldn't bet that the outcome would remain
the same!
Watch for Jerry's Kids as the Grateful Ed goes out in style this weekend.

I think Dave's right. I have had an uncomfortable feeling about this
private contest of and for the "elite," but couldn't put my finger on what
was wrong, quite. I couldn't get on till late, and don't have any low-band
antennas yet, so just hung around on 20 for about 25 QSOs. When my decent
antennas are up, I'm going to look forward to trying to improve on my
mediocre past scores -- it would be a shame if this contest within a contest
stuff continues (in whatever form) and discourages activity as it apparently
did this time.
