half-square help

does anyone have any experience with half-square antennas? I'd like to build
one for 80M, but I'm not sure how long to cut it. Do I use the formula for a 
loop (1005/f), or for a full-wave dipole (936/f)? How does the antenna radiate? 
Is it broad-side to the antenna, or is it end-fired? If you have used a 
half-square, how does it play? Thanks for the help.
