Decided to "look around" during the 160 meter contest.Started
by searching for the friends and quickly got caught up in the
W.A.S. mode. The Barbed wire fence was used exclusively as the
receive antenna except the hour before sunset and the hour after
sunrise. Even strong signals aren't heard well on this antenna
at these times.(angle of radiation difference?)
Worked 47 states. Heard KL7Y the first morning but couldn't
break the pileup. Heard AH6AZ the second morning but couldn't
break the pileup. Both were very loud.
Never heard a MAINE station. Loudest and most consistent West
Coast signal was NK7U/OR and numerous California stations.
Toughest time getting him to hear me was W0AIH/WI
Heard tons of DX.

pj9,p4,XE,etc. but didn't waste the time calling and qrming the
serious contesters with my poor signal.

Some of the guys continue to use the DX window to call CQ.Most
notable was k#XXX who probably believes the whole world stops
hearing DX when he stops hearing DX in the morning from his
North East QTH.He clobbered the XE/Wa7 who was callinq CQ
contest. Don't these guys realize that there is life on this
Earth to their West still in Darkness! And for those of you who
keep complaining,Yes I did sign /W4 as the CQ rules specify and
is what one should do in a DX contest anyway.

I'm having some problems on 80 & 40. I have a delta loop on the same tower
with my 402CD's. The loop is fed at the top with 75 ohm hardline and a
small piece of RG11 with many beads (Radiokit type) slipped over it. It
also has a shorted 1/4 wave 80m stub at the feed point.
During the NAQP, I noticed that while CQing on 40m, that the other rigs watt
meter would deflect when on the 80m antenna. 40 was trashing 80 obviously.
I also have a problem with the loop causing RFI in the shack. Specifically
my VGA mono monitor. I have a shorted 1/4 wave stub on 40m in the shack.
I'm in the process of building 1 more stub for both 80 and 40 meters and
seperating them by 1/4 wave. I'm also going to try and bring all of the
coax through a common ground at the shack (currently the wire just runs
through a hole in the wall). I'm also going to ground all of the shield of
the hardlines that run up this tower at the base of the tower.
The loop seems to play, and I am not in favor of taking it down. Does
anyone have any suggestions? (No, not an all band vertical Tree!)

I have a stack of 204BA's and a stack of 402CD's. Spaced the same distance,
with the 402CD's 10' above the 204BA's.
I'm having some trouble with the top 402CD in regards to SWR and I'm trying
to decide if I need to take it off the mast for observation. The SWR
changes to worse case as the 402CD is pointing perpendicular to the boom of
the 204BA (they aren't on the same mast). When they are in line, the best
SWR I can observe is 1.7:1 at about 7085Khz (about the right dip point). I
also have a 105CA 10' above the 402CD which turns on the same mast.
I'm sure there are others on the reflector with the 204BA/402CD combo....
have any of you had detuning problems with this combination?

My apologies for my transgressions into the 160M DX Window! I didn't
really give a full effort to this contest, doing only S&P until after
midnight (0800Z) on the second day of the contest. My brain must
have given out, as when I set up for my first CQ I thought I was
just below the bottom of the window. Actually I was just below the
top of the window on 1834.3. I appreciate someone saying "DX
Window" and I quickly QSY'd up a kHz. Later, it happened again!
My FT1000D went into a strange mode. According to the RES file from
CT, VFO A was on 1835.23 for 88 QSOs, even when I was working the
JAs split. The RES file accurately reports my VFO B frequencies for
the split QSOs. Apparently I worked someone during this time in the
DX window, then found a clear spot and CQ'd. My CT band map showed
me to be on 1835.23, and I didn't wake up to the fact that there was
only one line on the band map! When I was (politely) informed that
I was in the DX window, I moved again and became aware of the CT vs
FT1000D problem.
I could type in a frequency and the FT1000D would go there and stay
there, but on the next poll of the radio it would report 1835.23 to
CT. I loaded a different contest in CT and was able to send the
radio to frequencies on other bands, but again on the next poll CT
would report 1835.23, even though the radio was still where I had
sent it.
Rebooting the computer and cycling the power to the FT1000D changed
nothing. Then, I dug out the FT1000D book (there's no Index and no
help from the table of contents) and found the microprocessor reset
procedure on page 17. That fixed the problem! Now the radio tells
CT where it is, like it always had before. To reset the FT1000D,
turn power off and while holding SUB and ENT keys down, turn on
power. This also clears all the momories.
Has anyone else experienced this problem with a FT1000D? If you use
a FT1000D with a contest program, I suggest you make note of the
reset procedure so you can find it if you need it.
Again, I apologize for my transgressions into the DX Window. I
fully support the window concept and have a postit just above the
radio that says "DX Window 1830-1835". It's been there for months,
but it sure didn't get my attention well enough to prevent this
problem. Hopefully this tip about the FT1000D will partially pay
for any problems I might have caused for anyone.

Yes verticals pick up a lot of noise. I am also living in an urban area (a
hospital nearby emitting a lot of noise) and am enduring som of the same
problems on 160 meters.
May I suggest that you investegate if the JPS ANC-4 noise cannceler may be a
solution tor Your receiving problems.
The unit is placed between your station and the antenna, and works by
phasing out noise on the receiving signal by using a seperate "noise"
receiving antenna. It handles up to 150watts on tx.
There have been a discussion on the different reflectors on the subject. If
You are interrested, I can send you some of them (the ones I have saved :)
I have ordered a ANC-4 one month ago. It have not arrived yet, so I have no
further first hand experience to share, yet...
There have been adds in the QST magazine (december/95 i think), so you may
find more information there.
Another possibilitity is to put up an seperate receiving wire, whatever
lenght you can get room for, and tune it to the band you whant to use. On 80
meters this may surprise you to be an quiert rx antenna. You never can tell
before you have tried it...

On the first night conditions was not to good to state side. Conditions
picked up at day 2 to state side, where I managed to work a few calling CQ.
Caribian was best at 3z, with VP9AD up to S8 - what a signal. PJ9Z also had
a good signal, and seemed to have better RX - or less QRM. TO5T had a fair
signal and a steady EU pileup going all night, the only problem was that he
aparently didnt copy any of them ? (QRN?). the loudest from NA was VE1ZZ -
a solid S9. Also worked a couple of new countries in the contest : VP9AD,
PJ9Z, WP4IIW and 4K9W.
Anyhow, heres my score for the contest, cu all next year.
