I've used both the A505S and the 6M5XHP. I don't there is anything in the
Cushcraft that prevents it from accepting 1500W. It has a gamma match and
not a balun.
The 6M5XHP is a much higher quality product. The gain difference isn't that
much (1.5 dB more gain for the M2) but the quality of the M2 hardware is
vastly superior to Cushcraft. The elements on my A505S were all crooked on
the boom because the mounting clamps were not square. Also the A505S
factory dimensions do not produce a very good pattern at the low end of 50
MHz where the DX is. I got a set of modified dimensions for the A505S from
W1JR, which greatly improved the pattern.
If you can swing it, go for the 6M5XHP.

Subject: [Antennaware] Modding the 6M Cushcraft A505S?
I was considering making a 6M Yagi and
still would like to but realising my time constraints with upcoming
ankle/leg surgery this fall, I'm better to buy a turnkey antenna and put it
together on the roof and just be done with it. Until I relocate to a better
place to put up antennas have a tower.
It was suggested to the me that the 5
element Cushcraft A505S is a good choice but I see it has a 1KW limit and I
want something with a 1.5KW limit as I have a 1.5KW King Conversions amp.
Has anyone any experience in converting this antenna into one that takes
1.5KW?
Another option is the five element M2
6M5XHP which works fine with 1.5KW, will fit in the required location, but
costs twice as much as the Cushcraft.
Looking at the $ involved, the Cushcraft, if it can be easily modded to
handle the power, is a much more lucrative option.
I'm pretty sure the M2 is a nicer antenna overall.
Any Idears?

Gary
