Yes if you rectify it (a use for those old 1B3, 3A3 tubes) and use a very small
cap (.001 or mf or less) as a filter sure. Remember to current limit the
output so you do not cause damage due to flashover and protect your analog
meter with 2 diodes across the terminals. For a filament supply you can use a
"D" cell for short term use.

Seems like a natural with just a small variac used to vary the primary voltage
(120 VAC) for adjusting the output voltage.
