I think pre-MFJ Ameritron amps were not as well built as post-MFJ
Ameritron amps. The AL-84 is plastic and uses sweep tubes and the
original AL-80 is junk compared to the "A" or "B" models.
While it's very fashionable in some circles to bash MFJ at every
possible opportunity, much of the equipment MFJ makes works OK and is of
acceptable quality at the price point. Rather than bash the company,
amateurs ougth to pray that Mr. Jue survives to a ripe old age, because
many of the products he produces, like the DC to daylight antenna
analyzers, would not be available at anywhere the prices he's charging
for them if he stops making them. However, I do agree that there are
often some quality control problems with MFJ products, but again, I
don't expect Lexus quality at a Hyundai price.
