Autotransformers ARE safe devices -- IF used properly. Proper means
the entire winding connected between "hot" and "neutral," the load
connected between the tap and neutral, and the green (safety ground)
carried from source to load and connected to the transformer frame.
The first question though is, "What are you trying to accomplish in
the first place?" That is, what voltage do you need, and at what
current?
