Just looked at the article. Seems to be what I suggested earlier. Low mu
triode in grounded grid. The advantage of a 4CX tube with control grid
connected to the cathode requires no bias voltage and is should have very
little screen current, if any.
If you look at the article you will see all the drive power goes to the output.

Here is some more info for you to look at. Qst July 1967 page 34 is an
article by Orr on super cathode driven amps. He shows the difference in
IM performance on the 4CX350 in this configuration which if I remember
right is about 15 db better than grid driven.
