Neon bulbs are for wimps!

One of the engineers at the Jim Creek VLF site (1 megawatt) stood under one
of the antenna legs far up in the air and held a fluorescent lamp in his
hand and it lighted up. You can do impressive things when you have an amp
big enough to walk into. Just make sure the high voltage is higher than you
can reach, and it becomes a safe amplifier.

I told that story to a friend of mine, who had a long wire and lived on top
of a small hill. He taped a lamp to the high voltage point of his long wire
(never running more power than 100 watts) and would light up the 4 foot
lamp. When he keyed the rig, the lamp would flash. There were even ufo
reports in the neighborhood.

Happy New Year, Colin K7FM
