One local ham picked up an 10-12 sweep tube amp from a Hamfest, four tubes
driving eight or something similar. It had 80-10 meters on it. He actually
uses the thing with a Kenwood transceiver on 20 meters. I heard his splatter
on 14,002 kHz while he was operating way up around 14,298 talking to some
guys who sounded like truckers. They were telling him what a good amp he
purchased, and how loud the audio was.
It is becoming more common to see Hams using trashy solid-state CB amps.
MFJ/Ameritron decided to market a low-pass 160-10 meter switchable filter
for CB amplifiers because there is actually a demand for that, even though
the filter won't help splatter at all.
It seems pretty clear CB amps are or eventually will be a problem for anyone
who actually operates HF SSB. The unfortunate thing is most of us won't
realize it is a problem until it is too late to fix.
