This years effort was a more relaxed participation than in 95. With 3
operators and 2 stations we decided to run in Multi-Multi category
to have more fun.
Just 1 hour before the contest started we lost the TL-922 amplifier when
we tuned up on 80m. One of the tubes short-circuit and the glass cracked
near the base. The behavior of the 80m vertical was very strange and my
guess is that an unfavourable length of feed caused the problem.
We switch to a MLA-2500, and reduced the output power to reduce any risk
of another PA failure. As a consequence we forgot all about the TS-830S
which were in TX-position (no output), so after about 5 min. it gave up
as well !. A old Yeasu FT-902 was put back into service, however poor
sensitivity and bad tracking between TX and RX (appx. 500Hz offset)
didn't make things easier.
Our disaster band was 40m, AGAIN !. The 2 el. KLM preformed like an
omni-directional antenna and had a intermittent problem that looked like
a bad connection and caused infinite SWR so we ended up using the 160m
linear-loaded vertical. Do anyone have an idea how to get the KLM antenna
working ?.
We worked 10 US stations on 5 bands and RW2F as the only on all 6. Our
effort on 10 could have been better, hi.
