Comments:
This is my fourth Classic entry in this contest, and I am convinced that 24
hours of full effort is just about the right amount (though I do wish I could
use a second radio). I'm always amazed at all the big scores from stations I
never heard and to see enormous mult totals, but then my choice is to run almost
exclusively, with very little time spent looking around, and obviously no
internet spots to harvest.
That approach led to a major lack of Asian zones, except for JAs and E2A, who
called in on 10, 15, and 20. But condx were outstanding to EU on 40-10, and I
even worked quite a few on 80 (though only one on 160). This year I noticed very
little audio that was so distorted as to be unreadable, though there are many
stations that should turn their processors down. As always the G and M stations
tended to have the cleanest audio, and sometimes would prevail over louder
stations with muddled signals
The station worked great. The only problem is an apparent issue with our 2 el.
SteppIR controller. But I brought my own controller from home (probably about
15 years old), and that worked fine. It was generally left in the 180 degree
reverse position, to peak SA signals.
My hat is off to John, W2GD, whom I spent some time helping with his antenna
work. He was rebuilding towers and antennas in uncharacteristically hot and
humid weather -- just brutal conditions for outdoor work this week. I don't know
how he managed to stay awake to operate the contest!
As always, thanks to co-owner John, W6LD, and frequent user Ed, W0YK, for all
their efforts in maintaining the station, and to Cris and Jean-Pierre (P43C,
P43A) for their help with the house. Aruba is pretty much back to normal, so
socializing was possible with Lisandro, P43L, and Lissette, JP and Cris, and of
course perennial Aruban W2GD (P40W). The passing of Ben, DL6RAI, in May has
sadly left a void at the other end of the island.
A full write-up on the contest will be on our website. See
www.arubaqth.com. It's our 192d contest from P40L/P49Y.
