I LOVE THIS CONTEST! 10 hours and SIMPLE. And the exchange is perfect – you
know you’re getting it correct.
This is the 7th time I’ve done NAQP RTTY. Being relatively new to ham radio /
contesting, my scores usually increased every time. Last year was an overall
rate of 64Qs/hour – not bad for an old guy and his Little Pistol station. In
February 10M was a huge part of my score. This month, 10M decided not to show
up, at least in my little corner of RI. And I heard nothing on any of the bands
of RI & VT – I only got 43 of the 50 states.
This contest employed my new FLEX 6600. But no filters & triplexer. So as
an interim solution I attached the 40M dipole (which is at a whopping 40’)
directly into ANT2. This allowed me to SO2R as long as 40M was the other band.
It worked amazingly well! I could run simultaneously on 20 & 40M, or 40
& 80M, when ever those bands were available. But not between 15 & 20M,
which is where most of the action was for the first half of the contest. I now
understand the value of SO2R, and need to work out the tactics with the YCCC
PROs. I see the 403A triplexer in my future!
Thx for the Qs!
