Rich,
It appears that a moose stepped on the hardline going to the 2/2 40 stack. The
SWR is high, and I put the TDR on it and about half way out there are a bunch of
strange reflections. I don't know if we will be able to find the crimp and fix
it... with the four feet of snow. Dang moose...
Other than that one problem, everything else was pretty close to perfect. The
solar flare that bumped the SFI to 343 gave us a little extra high band run in
the first few hours. 40 opened early, and despite the high flux, we were able to
run four bands for about two hours. We averaged 400+ for the first three hours.
I don't ever remember even making a Q on 40 before 03Z.
We decided on the hobo MM because we actually expected conditions to be terrible
after the flare... so we figured we'd just set up for fun and make it so anyone
could sit and operate wherever and whenever. However, it was pretty clear after
a very short time that we were having those huge early runs and they weren't
going away as it got later... they just moved down in frequency.
We had no idea how good it was going to be.
We were over 1 million a little after 04Z. At 12Z we were over 2 million. The
old KL7 record of 2.9 million was broken before 18Z.
At 12Z I decided we should put our score online, which isn't something I would
normally do, but I thought it would be interesting to see how we were doing.
Turned out we were winning.
When the crew figured out that we might actually finish first in the world, we
found another gear. We hammered 10, 15, 20 and 40 for rate - we pretty much
already had the mults. We did OK on 80 the first night, but struggled on 160. We
knew that to win, we needed to have a big night Saturday night on 160. We
staffed up to have 40, 80 and 160 fully covered overnight - meaning nobody got
any sleep - and used 40 and 80 to pass stations to 160. It wasn't a great night
on 160, but it was good enough. I think it is a rare contest indeed when you
have huge runs on 10 (and the other bands) and a good night on 160.
We spent Sunday working the Sunday drivers... except that we had 180+ rates all
the way to the end of the contest.
I spent the last hour of the contest doing your job... watching everything work
smoothly, direct a little traffic. I never fully appreciated your job... You'd
leave 120-per-hour me in the chair rather than take it yourself. I never really
got that.
I get it now.
As far as we know, we have the top MM DX score. We're not sure if there are
others out there that haven't reported on 3830. Even if there is, this has never
happened before. The elusive "48 hours of great propagation" contest.
We had the people to make the most of it.
In the last few minutes before the end of the contest, I gave Jyl a call... I
wanted her to be the first to know.
We're doing phone in two weeks. You should come.
73,
Wigi, KL0R
