Comments:
When Tim informed me he was going to KL7RA for WW SSB again he offered me to do
ND7K. I met him 2 weeks before the contest and we installed a new 580ft. Oceania
Beverage. While we were at it we also checked existing beverages and found the
EU beverage completely broken at the termination end (due to a possible
microburst which also took down some yagis and a crankup). We spent all day
getting things ready as the station needs to have the majority of items
disconnected due to summer lightning storms.
I heard about the impending storm that was going to arrive. I don’t know what
effect it had in other areas but it surely had an effect in Western AZ. Most the
European opening here favored the Portugal/Spain area. Prop even switched back
and forth between skew path and direct. Was easy to work guys on S&P but
could not get anything going while running except tons of USA callers. I tuned
across the 10 meter band and I heard tons of East Coast guys running Europe but
all I could hear was EA’s and everything South. Same experience on 15 meters
except Western Europe was a little louder but not stronger than S7. 20 was down
to Europe since 15 & 15 were so alive. I was getting a lot of USA calls
again but just before I decided to change bands, I had 2 loud YL1 stations call
me. 40 on Friday night was typical, hard to run and only big gun stations were
heard and a few worked. Saturday night the Europeans were a bit louder and
easier to work. I found a clear freq. at 7131 and actually had a decent run
working Euros, VE’s and USA. Asia was good between JA and YB. 80 was down to
Europe, JA was fair.
I kept checking 160 all weekend and usually only heard K3LR, K3EST and PJ2T.
Sunday morning brought a handful of Caribbean and a few KH6’s. At or near
sunrise I was listening to Ken, N6RO (K3EST) CQing and heard a few JA’s come
back to him. I moved down 3 and ran for a bit trying to get a JA to reply, only
a few USA looking for Z3. Ken was still having callers that I was hearing so I
tuned up the band a bit and heard a JA at 1852 giving his call several times. I
threw in my call and asked him who he was calling. He came back and said “you,
your 20 over 9”. I ended up with 15 JA’s over the next 30 minutes!!
After 48 hours of 2 radio contesting the station worked flawlessly. The ICOM
7610’s are an awesome contesting radio.. Thanks ICOM!! Tim built a great
station and I’m so thankful for him giving me the opportunity to work these
big contests… Thanks Tim! I also want to give a shout out to Tim’s wife,
Tina, who surprised me with some hot dinner and breakfast… Thanks Tina!
Look for ND7K in WW CW as a M2 with Kurt, W6PH and Tim. I might do 49 or 50
hours..lol Hope to see everyone there!!
ND7K will be next on for SS CW as a MS with N6MJ, KI6RRN, and N6WIN.

continue to be a reliable solution when the more basic brains at ND7K are in
need. MOAS RX Solutions now in place.
