Comments:
That was fun.
I have been working on the station since the spring. The biggest
change was getting a higher 20 meter yagi up and that is proving to be
useful for DX.
I was hoping to have a few more things done but the next phase is
taking a bit longer but maybe I will get it done before the next CQ WW
SSB.
10 meters was a surprise - I knew we would have better conditions but
I did not expect on Sunday morning to see the band full of signals up
to 28.9 or more. Too bad we do not have that much bandwidth on the
other bands. It would be nice to have 500+ khz on 40 meters!
On Saturday evening both 160 and 80 got very good to Europe from here
- with many very good signals out of Europe. This really helped my
mult totals on those bands.
I put in a good 47 hours in the chair this year. I got a good 3+ hour
nap on Friday before the contest and that really helped.
I did not have any real issues with the station. I was sending scores
to the real time score system but at some point early on this stopped
working. Once that connection stopped working it appears that some
buffer or something was filling up in my computer because my logging
program would become unresponsive every 15 mins or so. Re-staring the
program fixed it but it was annoying. I finally went in and disabled
the real time score setup and that fixed the lockup issues.
The only other issue was that my Alpha 87a amps were faulting and
going into standby - this is not so good for the CQ rate if you do not
notice. At first I thought it was just one but it seems like maybe it
is both. The good news is that it does not seem to be the amps - the
bad news is I am not sure what is causing it yet. And of course in
the heat of the battle I kept forgetting to look closely at the fault
code. I guess I will hook up a computer and look at the fault
history. Auto band switching is nice but going to 50 watts out is not
so good. I need a big red light to trigger that I can not miss. Even
having the watt meters above each radio is not enough when I am tired
it seems.
Some folks have some really poor audio. Use a receiver or one of the
many web receivers and listen to your TX audio and fix it. Some WEB
SDR sites will let you make a recording and download the file so you
can listen to your signal. It will help you make more contacts.
I want to thank K5AND for all his help with the station improvements -
I told him I could put the hardware to use. Also a big shot out to
W5WTH, W5DMB and K5PI who I have helped me build and fix the station
in the last year.
