Comments:
Since this spring, a lot of time has been spent to change the antenna setup and
be ready before the CQWW DX RTTY.
The new tower and the 3 elts 40 are in place but the development of the big
20/15/10m antenna was not completed in time, by the manufacturer, to be able to
be in place for this contest.
Knowing that the current antennas would not be competitive for the runs on the
high bands, I tried to maximize the number of multis worked. The result is
satisfactory but I'm impatient to have completed the antenna project in order to
be able to combine the number of QSOs and the number of multis.
This year, my goal was to achieve 3,500,000 points and it is therefore achieved.
Although having broken the EU record, it'll be not enough because Filipe,CR6K,
also beat it and much more widely than me.
Regarding the propagation, SFI improved largely during the week, at the right
time to have the beneficials effects and no CME arrived at earth if it was earth
directed.
- 80m: a lot of noise on this band, not always easy to decode. Less overloaded
than during previous editions. I thought I was having a hard time coming close
to the score of 25 US/VE states made last year and then finally I contacted the
23rd in the last half hour.
- 40m: I expected a lot from the new antenna. 30 minutes before the contest, I
made a test (with 100W in RTTY) with W4RN, result: he received me 58 with the 2
elts @ 19m and 59 +05 dB with the 3 elts @ 25m.
Whaouuu, promising...
Finally, after the contest, I can say: AWESOME !
I rediscovered the propagation on this band. Before I struggled to work 2 JA in
S&P, now I get called by JA/DU/HL/YB. Ditto for the US 2 hours before their
sunset, the reports are fantastics.
Before I peaked with a maximum of 40 US/VE states and this week-end I ended up
with 49 while I missed VO1 and VO2 which were 599 10 minutes before the end of
the contest (the M-O big gun pack was too big to losentime at the end when the
band was full of clean and strong US stations to work).
- 20m: band closed for a few hours at night. Good propagation. Runs on the US
only possible when all the eastern half of Europe is deprived of propagation on
this band otherwise it is too overloaded and the S&P is more productive with
3 elements.
- 15m: surprising band. The lack of activity outside of the contests makes us
forget that there are also beautiful openings on this band (just go on 21074.0
and it's always S9++...).
- 10m: outside South America in the early evening, the band was rather closed
for low power stations most of the week-end. Sunday evening, after 19.00z and
for 2 hours, an opening appeared with the Caribbean via skewed path (antenna
beamed South America) with weak but workable reports. W5PR and HP3SS were
printed on the screen (via the same path only) but too weak
to be worked with 100W. The European big guns were also workable via
backscatter.
It was a tiring but very satisfying/funny week-end !
Special thanks to my wife who brought me meal trays all the week-end, this is
where the "assisted category" takes on its full meaning.
